Recommended Marian Apparition Books

Donal Anthony Foley reviews Fatima: A Heart for the World, by Barry Pearlman

"Barry Pearlman has produced a well-written overview of Fatima in this book, one which is full of interesting details and theological insights. In 250 pages, and twelve chapters, he details what happened at Fatima and its significance for the world."

Donal Anthony Foley reviews, The Miracle Detective: An Investigation of Holy Visions, by Randall Sullivan

"The real tragedy about Medjugorje is that it has diverted well-meaning Catholics away from support for Fatima. Instead of fulfilling Our Lady’s requests, particularly as regards the promotion of the Five First Saturday’s devotion, many have been led astray by all the publicity about Medjugorje. Unfortunately, the success of this book, and others like it, means that the Medjugorje juggernaut will rumble on for the foreseeable future. It would appear that only decisive condemnatory action at the highest levels of the Church will be capable of rectifying this situation."

Amy Welborn reviews Searching For Mary: An Exploration of Marian Apparitions Across the U.S, by Mark Garvey, (Plume Press 1998 238 pages) - http://www.amywelborn.com/mary.html

"Garvey’s book is a report of his personal experiences at six American apparitions sites. He traveled to New York, Georgia, Illinois, Wisconsin, Arizona and California, witnessing apparition” “events” when possible and speaking to most of the living seers personally ... For those unfamiliar with this particular aspect of Roman Catholic spirituality, Garvey provides helpful historical and theological background. He carefully explains the Church’s cautious position on apparitions and includes an excellent short chapter on the issue of discernment of spirits and judging the authenticity of apparitions."

Donal Anthony Foley reviews, God-Sent : A History of the Accredited Apparitions of Mary by Roy Abraham Varghese

This book has some useful points in its favor, but ultimately, it must be said to be unsatisfactory, not least because of the inclusion of some alleged apparitions under the heading "accredited," and this is particularly the case with Medjugorje.

Donal Anthony Foley reviews, The Great Apparitions of Mary: An Examination of Twenty-Two Supranormal Appearances, by Ingo Swann

THis is an interesting book in some respects, but ultimately, for anyone who is looking for something incisive about the Marian Apparitions, rather disappointing.

Donal Anthony Foley reviews, Apparitions in Late Medieval and Renaissance Spain, by William A. Christian Jr.

This book is written from the perspective of nonacceptance of the supernatural with regard to alleged Marian apparitions, but despite this it is for the most part a thoughtful book, and one which provides some very useful resources for those seriously interested in studying such phenomena.

Donal Anthony Foley reviews, Mexican Phoenix, Our Lady of Guadalupe: Image and Tradition across Five Centuries, by D. A. Brading, (Cambridge University Press, 2001, £27.95, 444 pp.).

Mexican Phoenix, David Brading's intriguing book on the impact that the Image imprinted on Juan Diego's tilma has had on Mexican life and history, is in large part sympathetic to both its subject and to Catholicism—which is unusual nowadays!

Donal Anthony Foley reviews, Marian Shrines of France: Rue du Bac, La Salette, Lourdes, Pontmain edited by Brother Francis Mary Kavelage F.F.I.
