The Benediction hymn Tantum Ergo contains the words: "Ancient types have long departed" - a reference to the prefiguring of the Blessed Eucharist in the Old Testament. In a series of lectures at the Catechetical Institute of Our Lady of Peace, Beaverton, Oregon, a noted American Scripture scholar, Fr Richard W. Gilsdorf, explained the meaning of these "types", of the promise of the Eucharist in the sixth chapter of St John's Gospel and of the fulfilment of this promise at the Last Supper. His lectures were edited into booklet form by a Catholic journalist in Australia, Paul MacLeod, in collaboration with Fr Gilsdorf.

These lectures throw fascinating light, not only on the way in which the institution of the Blessed Eucharist fulfilled so much that had been foreshadowed in the history of Israel, but also on the inner meaning of the Gospel texts.

The booklet, of 26 pages, is available from the Blessed Padre Pio Centre, 2 Hawthorn Avenue, Belmont, Victoria, 3216, Australia;
